Anbumani Ramadoss made a statement the other day. At the India Today Roundtable the PMK leader said that the Centre is taking Karnatakas side in the Cauvery water dispute. He thinks this is because the BJP has power in Karnataka than in Tamil Nadu. So the Centre does not want to upset the people of Karnataka.
This is a deal because the Cauvery river is very important to people in Tamil Nadu. It is a matter of life and death for farmers in the delta. When the water does not come on time the crops do not grow well. The families get worried. When a national leader says that the Centre might be playing politics with the water it makes people feel more hopeless.
The Cauvery water dispute is not a problem. Many governments have. Gone, but the problem is still there. Courts and authorities have made decisions. Both states are still arguing. Anbumani Ramadosss words make us ask a question: is the Centre really being fair or are elections influencing its decisions?
Blaming the Centre alone will not solve the problem. Farmers need water to grow their crops not speeches from politicians. Karnataka also needs water, especially for people to drink in the cities. Just pointing fingers at each other will not fill the canals with water.
What we need is a system that can make both states follow the rules. The Cauvery river should be free from politics much, as possible. Anbumani Ramadoss has said what he thinks. Now we have to see if the leaders can put the people first and find a way to share the Cauvery water. The Cauvery water dispute is a test for the leaders to show that they care about the people, not just the Cauvery water dispute but the people who depend on the Cauvery river.
